Writing to Tea

This page is under construction, so please bear with me. I want to include advice and tips for writing, style guildes, articles, book list, and much more. For the moment, it is a place holder for the current pages of writing I have and will be changed after I have finished the NaNoWriMo challenge November 2011.

I can certainly offer a list of really good key books for writing (excluding style guides like MLA and whatnot):

  • Writing Down the Bones by Natalie Goldberg
  • On Writing Well by William Zinsser
  • Elements of Style by William Strunk & EB White
  • Complete Guide to Writing Fiction & Nonfiction & Getting Published by Pat Kubis & Bob Howland
  • On Writing by Stephan King
  • The Artist's Way by Julia Cameron

I like to write to music and tea.

I select music that feels right for the genre of story or the emotions that will be in the story. Sometimes I select cultural music if I am writing in a different time or culture. For exanple, for my Assassins Creed & Tsubasa & Harry Potter stories, I write to their soundtracks. If I am writring based in an Asian culture, then I select traditional Asian music. This helps me feel like I am in the time and place of the story.

As for tea, I like to assign specific teas to characters. For example, Iroh from Avatar the Last Airbender drinks either Jasmine Dragon Tears or Ginseng. So when I am writing a chapter mostly focused on him, I will also drink one of those teas. It helps me get into the head of the character. If I have no character specific teas, then I like to write to Cream Earl Grey or Red Lychee.
