Avatar Renaissance Championships

How It Began...

Avatar: the Last Airbender (ATLA), Season 2 finale ended very early in December 2007. The fans waited and waited for news of Season 3. Rumors and speculations hinted at February 2007. February came. February went. Hope was then for March. March came. March went. The fans lamented and grew frustrated. There was vague hope for a May/June release as the hope and enthusiasm was slipping away. May slipped by. The forum Dai Li struggled to be current and keep their members interested and hopeful.

Then on May 28^th, one member had a brilliant idea. Nüncle Zero was his name and this is what he posted:

Okay, I’ve noticed something recently, and I’m not saying its wrong, but not too many people have ATLA related sigs anymore.

It seems that new members are all about ATLA for about 2 weeks or so, but then they somehow make their way to the LTAE (Let’s Talk About Everything) thread and are pulled into spiraling pools of crazy pot-induced topics (no offense anyone lol I’m joking).

What I’m trying to say is that we need....

AN ATLA RENAISSANCE WEEK!!!

I think that for one week we should all be about ATLA again and at least change our avvies/sigs to match this for a week at the most.

If any admins read this, maybe we could make this one of those holiday events or something if enough people thought it was a good idea.

The Dai Li admins got involved in the discussion. The thread had random babble toying with the idea until Three Dai Li stepped in and made more concrete suggestions. Uncle Iroh suggested forum skins, a special board for the Avatar Renaissance (AvRen), and maybe some kind of online party or dance. ZMP was thrilled and came up with a ton of ideas:

-maybe we could have 4 main sigs to choose from, one for each nation...

- and the members pick which of the four they want to add to their siggie box...

- and that is the nation they are from for the week!

- all 4 should have similar design though, to create uniformity

yellow with air

We can even have rooms for nation-only members... can create armies and band together to take control of the food fight in the kitchen... I mean in a WAR ROOM... where members can sling it out in organized battles....

Oh... I am so excited!

And so it was begun. A new category was made in the forum with four new boards: General Discussion, Four Nations Discussion, AvRen Events, and the WAR ROOM. The Four Nation Discussion board had four sub-boards, one for each nation where ScarletCougar’s ideas were implemented. This section later became the Ba Sing Se University board in the regular forum. The WAR ROOM board had four nation sub-boards as well. But how was the war to work?

The WAR Scheme

Taunt011 came up with the first AvRen image:

It was David: The Last Cabbage Bender (David TLCB) who really filled us in and formulated the working plan. His opening speech moved us all.

Now that we inaugurate the Avatar Portal Renaissance (the "avren") let's hear what are your expectations for this event.

We have been waiting for new episodes very patiently for months, and some of us were pissed to hear that Nick pushed the dateline even farther away.

Right now, let's focus on what we already have like the wonderful community of avatar fans that this forum has. People of all ages, who are very friendly and even crazy sometimes. I can say that this is the nicest avatar forum I’ve seen, and I’m proud to be part of it.

Let the renaissance begin!

He then paved the way for the WAR.

Avatar World Championship

Instead of focusing on the part where we kill each other for... whatever reason we think is good, we can have a big competition involving all the Nations in different challenges between 2 teams of different Nations for points that will get them into the final round.

Each Nation has to compete against all nations at least once in the first round (think World Cup) then, the two nations with the most points goes to the final round, and the winners are crowned as the "Champions of the Renaissance" (special siggies and stuff).

The challenges are of very different categories ranging from:

1 - RPG (where the proper war happens)

2 - Haiku/Poetry contests (you know you want it)

3 - Short Story contests (we have pretty good writers in every nation)

4 - Avatar Trivia (how much do you really know about Avatar? I know some people who are very much interested in this kinds of contest)

5 - Critical Thinking (in depth look at hot topics like shipping, character debates, important events that made a turning point in the show. It's like a debate team where 2 people from each nation go to a formal debate. We choose a moderator to... moderate the debate, and at the end the team with the most concrete arguments, supported by evidence, wins the debate)

6 - Art (sigs, backgrounds, posters, avs and more)

Those are the 6 challenges every Nation has to complete in order to win the Points necessary to reach the Final Round. The good thing is that you will want to participate in at least 1 challenge. Remember this is a team effort, and it's not necessary for all the Nations to participate at the same event. You have to select your RP team, your Writing Team, your Poetry Team, your Wiz-kid Team, your Debate Team, and your Art Team.

Each challenge won will give the team 100 points. The loser gets 0 points. But no one is completely lost, for the loser may still earn some points. If you did well, and your performance was a good one, you can win Bonus Points, 25 each. There are 2 sets of 25 Bonus Points that can be won every time. Just remember that the other team can also win the bonus points, so you have to be prepared. The Bonus Points are awarded by the respective moderator of the challenge, and it's his/her decision to award them.

In all, you can win 150 points for each challenge.

The Avatar World Championship will last through all the Renaissance.

The War Scores

These were the final results of the AvRen Championships. Battles and special events occurred throughout the summer of 2007 and ended with the premiere of Season 3 of ATLA on September 21^st, Fall Equinox. A Tea Room was opened where people can chat and comment on the battles and how the war was going. It was a neutral place where members of the Four Nations could meet and talk.

This meant people had to first choose a favorite nation to join. The requiring began and members of the forum chose their side, their favorite culture, their favorite element. Leaders were chosen for each nation.

They formed their teams for the war. The nations boasted about their greatness. They created propaganda and patriotic art. Although, there were a few members of Avatar Portal that adamantly about remained neutral. Coyote and Hybrid were notably among these few.
